Floodlights
These are the simplest lantern used in modern theatre. They consist of a lamphousing containing a bulb and reflector. And that's your lot!
They give a very large flood of light, with very little control. Barndoors can be used to try and shape the beam.
There are two sort of reflector though, to add a bit of variation - symmetrical and asymmetrical. The symmetrical are as they sound and give an even beam of light in all directions.
The asymmetrical ones are typically used for lighting backdrops where you want more light going downwards to light the bottom of the cloth, and less spilling upwards to get the area above the cloth.
