Fresnel & PC spots

The fresnel is the workhorse of theatre lighting - a fairly simple lantern with a lamp housing containing a bulb and reflector and a lens on the front. The beam quality is a soft edge spot, where the light just appears to fade out at the edges.

A PC is very similar to a fresnel, but with a different type of lens. The name PC comes from the type of lens used, standing for plano-convex or prism convex depending on the manufacturer. The light quality is similar to the fresnel but the beam is not quite as soft around the edge.

The beam of either type of lantern can be adjusted in size by moving the bulb and reflector in relation to the lens.

The only means of shaping the beam is with barn doors of the front of the lantern allowing a degree of control

The PC is a good half way house between the fresnel and the profile spot, giving a similar beam quality to the profile but without the high degree of control, but the speed and efficiency of the fresnel to rig.
