PARCans
The PARcan is to the rock world what the fresnel spot is to the theatre. The PARcan is a very simple Lantern consisting of a round can with a bulb at one end.
The special part is the bulb, in that it is a moulded unit containing the reflector and the lens all in one.
The beam from a PARcan is almost parellel along its length, and elliptical in cross-section. The only real control is to rotate the bulb which will move the angle of the ellipse. If you want a wider or narrower beam, you have to change the bulb to one with different optical properties.
The PARcan though generates a lot of light, and is ideal for large saturated colour washes - hence its use in the music world. They are also very, very light, and simple to rig and "focus".
